SupportDetails
British Columbia's Premier David Eby has voiced support for the federal gun buyback program, citing the impact of semi-automatic rifles in B.C. communities. However, the province will not force its 12 independent municipal police departments to participate — each department will determine "whether and how they participate." If local police opt out, the RCMP will handle collections. As of February 20, 2026, British Columbians have declared 7,368 assault-style firearms in the program.
Official Statement
“The reason why we support it is we see the impact of semi-automatic rifles in communities in our province, not the least of which was this most recent horrific incident in Tumbler Ridge.”
— David Eby, Premier of British Columbia
